How to Set Up Categories in Modern Commerce
Create a Modern Commerce category, assign it to products and use it to organise the customer catalogue without changing Moodle course categories.
Categories built for selling
A Modern Commerce category organises sellable offers around the way customers browse and the way administrators manage the catalogue. One category can group a course product, bundle and program even when their underlying Moodle courses belong to different learning categories.
Modern Commerce categories and Moodle course categories
The two category systems serve different purposes:
- Moodle course categories organise courses for learning administration, permissions and the Moodle course hierarchy.
- Modern Commerce categories organise commercial products for catalogue presentation, filtering and promotion.
Changing a Modern Commerce category does not move or reorganise the linked Moodle course. This separation lets the learning structure remain stable while the sales structure follows customer needs.
Create the category
Open Modern Commerce → Categories and select Add Category. Enter a clear customer-facing name and review the other category details. Configure visibility according to whether the category should be available in the catalogue, then save the record.
Return to the category table and verify that the saved name, visibility and product count are correct.
Assign products
Open Modern Commerce → Products, edit the relevant product and select the new category. Save the product, then confirm that its row shows the category assignment.
The same commerce category can be used by course products, bundles and programs. This makes it possible to present several offer types around one customer need without changing the Moodle course hierarchy.
Use the category in the catalogue
Open the customer catalogue and use Product Categories to filter the available offers. Selecting the category should return every visible product assigned to it, including supported course, bundle and program offers.
Commerce categories can also target coupons. When configuring an eligible coupon, select the product-category targeting option and choose the category whose offers should receive the promotion.
Verify the complete workflow
Confirm the category appears in the administration table, is assigned to the intended products, filters the customer catalogue correctly and is available for coupon targeting. These checks verify that the category is working as a commercial grouping rather than as a Moodle learning category.
